Discussion: Rose Garden and White House happenings: but which party will win? GOP. DNC, or the NSDNC?

Easiest fix in the world for SS would be to raise the cap on income subject to tax.

It's like everyone gets stupid with regard to taxing any higher incomes. "OMG we need to search high and low for a solution to this complex conundrum!"

Just raise the cap. Done.

This has actually been a good thing for Canada.  The Canadian hospitality sector has been delighted to offer its services to the people of the globe who would like to come to North America but have no interest in spending money in the US.

Of course, it is a two way street.  Lots of Canadians who would have been traveling to the US now choose to spend their loonies in Europe or Mexico.

You spend your loonies, we elect ours.

Discussion: 39 Jefferson Avenue

There are already many examples of the type of houses the developer builds in Maplewood. No builder can ever replicate the charm and uniqueness of the original homes they tear down. If they were willing to do a gut on the inside while maintaining the outside aesthetics, that would be a different situation. But these developers do not that. I stand by my original comment that a new home will stick out like a sore thumb and change the charm of the neighborhood, not for the better. When we moved here years ago, a main reason was the non cookie cutter inventory of homes. Now there are Lefko specials all over the place.

Discussion: What Happened to Maplewood Republicans?

Re "White Flight" in the 90s - Our first home was in the Hilton section of Maplewood from 1986-1994. That was a period of some degree of white flight and more black families moving into town and that section had more "starter homes" (same reason we bought there - it was what we could afford at the time. But we really didn't know much about the demographic issues.)  We moved across Springfield Avenue in 1994 to be closer to the train and our church and to get a somewhat larger home and were surprised how much "whiter" the neighborhood was after we did so. When we were selling our Hilton home, the first question our elderly (and, unfortunately, somewhat bigoted) neighbors asked about our home sale was "Are they black?" I (truthfully) told them no but neglected to tell them that the buyers were a lesbian couple. Those neighbors moved a few years later, to be closer to grown children but perhaps also as part of that "white flight". Around the time we moved was when the CCR's efforts to attract more white families (from Brooklyn and other places) started to bear fruit and Hilton is now probably the most diverse part of town, but I believe that all areas benefitted.

And the attitudes expressed above also explain the diminishing industry sector that is your Tourism and Hospitality.

that overused term “people of color” is getting tired as the range of “colors” around the globe grows  exponentially almost daily! The Civil War is over!

If one is concerned about the burden of “lower income arrivals,” it might be wise to  set limits on the number of immigrants from around the globe demanding their “right” to enter the USofA and partake of its largesse. Seems a good number of these folks paid large  sums of money to traffickers for helping them break and disrespect our laws from Day One!

I would be more concerned about Dems voting Socialists, splitting up  the Party.  rather than building a stronger united one. Who, or what will the DNC become?

The racism in your post is loud enough it barely needs comment, but don't overlook the false implication that you respect our laws. The scale and breadth of this administrations lawlessness is gobsmacking, but even if we focus just on your pet topic -- immigration -- we see a lawless presidency:
